Subcision + PRP Micro-Needling

Target: acne scars, texture, and skin quality

Subcision + PRP Micro-Needling is a corrective treatment designed for patients who are truly ready to improve indented acne scars, uneven texture, and skin quality—beyond what topical skincare can do on its own.

This combination works on two levels:

  1. Subcision helps release deeper, tethered scars from underneath the skin.

  2. PRP Micro-Needling stimulates collagen with your body’s own growth factors to smooth, strengthen, and rejuvenate the surface.

How Subcision Works

Certain acne scars (like rolling or boxcar scars) are “tethered” down by fibrous bands beneath the skin. No amount of moisturizer or exfoliation can lift them, because the problem is structural—not just surface.

During subcision:

  • A very fine needle or cannula is inserted just under the skin.

  • Gentle back-and-forth motion is used to break up the fibrous bands pulling the scar down.

  • This releases the scar from the underlying tissue, allowing it to lift and appear less indented over time.

  • The controlled micro-trauma also stimulates your body’s own healing response and collagen production.

Subcision is ideal for:

  • Rolling acne scars

  • Boxcar scars

  • Depressed, tethered scars that look worse when you stretch or smile

How PRP Micro-Needling Works

After subcision, we support your skin’s repair process with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Micro-Needling.

  • A small amount of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelet-rich plasma—often called “liquid gold.”

  • PRP is rich in growth factors that support healing, collagen production, and tissue regeneration.

  • Using a professional micro-needling device, we create controlled micro-channels in the skin and infuse PRP across the treated area.

  • This helps improve:

    • Overall skin texture and tone

    • Fine lines and superficial scars

    • Redness and post-inflammatory changes

    • Skin strength and elasticity over time

Together, subcision + PRP Micro-Needling address both the deeper tethering and the surface quality of the skin.

Benefits of Subcision + PRP Micro-Needling

  • Softens the appearance of indented acne scars

  • Helps lift tethered scars for a smoother contour

  • Improves overall texture, tone, and firmness

  • Uses your own plasma—no synthetic filler is added in this treatment

  • Supports a more natural collagen remodeling process

  • Progressive, long-term improvement with a series of treatments

What to Expect During Treatment

  1. Consultation & Assessment
Your provider will evaluate your scars, skin type, and medical history to confirm that you’re a good candidate. Not all scars are the same, so the treatment plan is customized to your skin.

  2. Numbing
A topical numbing cream is applied to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

  3. Subcision

    • The targeted scars are treated individually.

    • You may feel some pressure, tugging, or mild discomfort, but most patients tolerate it well with numbing.

  4. Blood Draw & PRP Preparation

    • A small amount of blood is drawn, similar to a routine lab test.

    • It is spun in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma.

  5. PRP Micro-Needling

    • The micro-needling device is passed across the treatment area while PRP is applied and worked into the micro-channels.

    • Skin may appear pink/red, similar to a moderate sunburn immediately after.

  6. Post-Treatment Care

    • Mild swelling, redness, and possible pinpoint bruising (especially where subcision was performed) are normal.

    • Your provider will give detailed aftercare instructions, including when you can resume skincare, makeup, and exercise.

Downtime & Recovery

  • Redness & Swelling: typically 1–3 days, sometimes longer depending on the intensity of your treatment.

  • Bruising: may occur, especially in areas where subcision was performed; this can take 5–10+ days to fully fade.

  • Skin Feel: your skin may feel tight, dry, or “sandpapery” for a few days as it heals.

Most patients are comfortable returning to normal activities within a few days, with makeup usually allowed once the skin barrier is intact (your provider will specify timing).

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Acne scarring is a corrective journey, not a one-time fix.

  • Many patients start with a series of 3–4 sessions, spaced about 4–6 weeks apart.

  • The exact number of treatments depends on:

    • The type and depth of your scars

    • Your skin’s healing response

    • Your goals and how much improvement you’d like to see

Results continue to build over months as collagen remodels and the skin heals.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have indented/atrophic acne scars (rolling, boxcar, or tethered scars)

  • Are bothered by uneven texture or “dents” in the skin

  • Are willing to commit to a series of treatments for best results

  • Do not have active skin infections, uncontrolled acne, or certain medical conditions that affect healing

A consultation is always required to determine if this combination is appropriate and safe for you.

Important Notes

  • Results vary from person to person.

  • This treatment is not meant to replace a full acne management plan; it focuses on scarring and texture, not active breakouts.

  • Some patients may benefit from combining this with other treatments (peels, lasers, or energy-based devices) as part of a comprehensive scar-reduction plan.
